The San Manuel Band of Mission Indians of California is donating
$1 million to the Havasupai Tribe of Arizona, whose economy has
been wrecked by a flood in the Grand Canyon.

The donation will be presented to the Havasupais on Thursday.
"We are glad that we can help," a spokesperson for the
San Manuel Band told The Arizona Republic.

The tribe closed the Supai village, its main source of tourism income, after floods washed through the
canyon in August. The village won't reopen until spring 2009.

The Bureau of Indian Affairs Truxton Canon Agency (BIA TCA) completed
the preliminary flood damage assessment and presented it to the
Havasupai Tribal Council on Wednesday, September 03, 2008. Attached is

The Havasupai Tribe primarily depends on tourism revenues to operate
its government and provide services to its Tribal members. The
Havasupai Tribal members also depend on tourism dollars for income. The
Havasupai Tribal government is the primary employer on the Havasupai
Reservation. The Bureau of Indian Affairs and the Indian Health Service
provide limited employment opportunities for the Havasupai Tribal
members.

The Supai Canyon is closed until infrastructure are repaired and
rehabiliated. Supai Canyon is not open to visitors at least until Summer
2009. As a result of the flood and immediate closure, tourism related
employees have been laid off and additional layoffs are expected
organization wide.

The Havasupai Tribal Council is therefore requesting financial and
technical assistance during this difficult time. In addition, the Supai
community which will be mostly without income at least until summer 2009
is in need of financial and supplies assistance.

the Havasupai Tribe and its Tribal members contact the following
